Recognizing Impact Aid Champions

Posted Date: 02/25/26 (02:05 PM)

Crescent Harbor, Hillcrest Elementary, and Oak Harbor Elementary staff were recognized at last night’s school board meeting as “Impact Aid Champions.” The three schools were highlighted for their crucial, hands-on work, engaging directly with families to ensure that a high rate of Impact Aid forms were returned. In November, front office assistant Laura Vera helped secure an early 100% return rate for Crescent Harbor Elementary.

Impact Aid Coordinator and Human Resources Specialist, Megan Kinghorn, was honored for her pivotal role in driving the success of the months-long campaign, including her efforts to foster friendly competition among the schools to meet the form return rate goals.

Families who have not yet completed their Federal Impact Aid form still have a few days to submit as the district is now wrapping up its application to the US Department of Education. This is the final opportunity to secure critical funding for Oak Harbor Public Schools.

Impact Aid is the Federal Government's reimbursement to school districts for the presence of non-taxable Federal property, such as NAS Whidbey Island. These dollars are not automatic; they are determined directly by the number of completed forms we receive. Since nearly half of OHPS students qualify, the return of every single form directly impacts the resources our schools receive.

School Board Director Nicole Tesch encouraged families who haven’t returned their forms to submit them during the meeting. “Each Impact Aid form represents a substantial amount of funding per child,” said Director Tesch. “I filled out four forms for my kids and it took me less than two minutes.”
