About North Whidbey Middle School

Cougar PRIDE

Preparing students for high school success.

The mission of North Whidbey Middle School (NWMS) is to prepare all students for high school success. Success in high school and later in life depends on learning essential academic skills and knowledge, being able to work with others to solve problems, keeping oneself physically and mentally healthy, and developing safe and supportive relationships with friends.  Our hard-working staff of teachers and counselors, classroom assistants, secretaries, custodians, food service workers, and administrators help students grow in all of these areas.

We expect students to carry themselves with Cougar PRIDE. That means that students are prepared and respectful, act with integrity and determination, and express empathy toward others.  We will teach students what PRIDE looks like in all areas of the school, because middle school students do not always know what expected behaviors are and how those expectations change in different places. For instance, students do not run in the halls, but they do run fast in P.E. This will make our school a safe place to learn, play, and grow.

NWMS offers a wide selection of academic and extracurricular opportunities for its students. In all classes, teachers strive to create engaging learning opportunities that challenge students to meet learning standards. We offer intervention classes for students who need extra instruction to develop reading or math skills. For students who learn quickly and demonstrate an appetite for learning, advanced and honors classes are available.

Students can select from a variety of elective courses, including band, choir, visual arts, and Spanish. Students can enroll in robotics or basic mechanics and technology class. Extracurricular opportunities also abound. Clubs like Yearbook, Builder’s Club, Chess Club, and others meet after school.  7th and 8th-grade students can compete in competitive athletics against other middle school athletes in our area.  And students can always start a new club, based on the interests they bring with them.

The aim of the North Whidbey staff is for students to enter our school every day feeling safe, excited to learn, and ready to work hard in order to achieve.  We want to work with families and the community to partner in this so that we can accomplish our mission of preparing all of our students for high school success when they complete 8th grade.
