Science John Worthington Phone: (360) 279-5529 Email: jworthington@ohsd.net I am a retired Navy Captain who is embarking on a second career as a secondary level Science teacher. During my 29 years in the Navy, I worked closely with a very diverse group of young men and women to help motivate them and inspire them to achieve their best. My strength as a Science teacher lies in my practical application of scientific inquiry, theories, and procedures. I flew high performance jets from the decks of aircraft carriers and navigated frigates on open oceans in all meteorological conditions. I teach concepts from a first hand perspective of one who used them in a practical way. My life experiences, my Bachelor of Science from the United States Naval Academy, and the Post-baccalaureate Teaching Program in Secondary Science prepared me to use the latest pedagogy to help guide your child through scientific inquiry. I hold a State of Washington endorsement in Science and meet the NCLB standards of a Highly Qualified Teacher of secondary grades in the Science content area. Eighth grade science is a combination of physical and earth sciences. During our physical science units we will be primarily focused on chemistry concepts. Earth science will include meteorology, geology, hydrology and astronomy. Each of the units will be be a combination of concept instruction and inquiry based activities that will give students experience with the processes and skills of science as well as the content. Grades are based on test and project grades, daily work as well as a science lab journal. Students will also be exposed to the use of computer technology as a tool of science. We are fortunate enough to have a student/ computer ratio of 4/1. This allows students to use technology when it is appropriate and will assist learning. The integration of technology as a science learning tool is one of our goals. |
