8th Grade Advanced Art

 

Goals:       

          The purpose of this course is to increase your understanding of art and to increase your ability to communicate using art. We are constantly absorbing the visual world around us. This could include anything from natural environments to internet ads. Our goal is to recognize visual art as a language and use it. To put it simply, art is one way we can express and interpret the world around us.  

 

Objectives:

          We will gain experience with the tools of the artist. These tools are the Elements of Art and the principles of design. The Elements of art are; line, shape, space, texture, color, form and value. 8th grade with be delving into Principles of Design. The Principles of Design are; pattern, rhythm, balance, unity, movement, contrast and emphasis. We will also use materials to create art like; pencil, ink, paint, scratchboard, chalk, charcoal, clay, wire and a variety of paints.   

 

Procedures:

            Students will actively participate in hands on art experiences. This will include creating master pieces, mounting, framing, throwing (clay on a potter’s wheel), preliminary sketches, still life, computer work and critiques. Art history and education opportunities will be addressed. 8th grade will be focused primarily on the modern art, the human face and product design. Below is an outline of our weekly schedule.

 

Mon.                                 Still life, Character sketching or Skill building exercise.

Tue.                                  Intro and warm up to Masterpiece project.

Wed.-Thurs.                    Workday for your Masterpiece.

Fri.                                   Art History Friday’s!!! Seeing the masters will help you be one.

           

Policies:

 

Attendance is strictly required as this is participation and effort based class. Being tardy will result in a detention.

 

I expect respectful attitudes not just to the teacher but to other students as well.

 

Appropriate language! Cussing isn’t very creative.  

 

You may not have food, drinks or gum out unless you have been given permission.

 

Raise hands, I can only respond to one person at a time. If we are working on a project please continue on a part of your project you do not require help with.

 

Evaluation:

          The standards for evaluation will be based on participation and project completion. These include; effort, creativity, improvement, commitment to learn and following project criteria as well as the bellow percentages.

 

20%       participation and attendance

30%      sketches and exercises

30%       masterpieces

20%      art history

 

A=90%-100%      B=80-90%    C=70-80%    D=60%
