Mr. Christopherson’s

6th Grade Discovering Art

Goals:

The purpose of this course is to increase your understanding of art and to increase your ability to communicate using art. We are constantly absorbing the visual world around us. This could include anything from natural environments to internet ads. Our goal is to recognize visual art as a language and use it. To put it simply, art is one way we can express and interpret the world around us.

Objectives:

We will gain experience with the tools of the artist. These tools are the Elements of Art and the principles of design. The Elements of art are; line, shape, space, texture, color, form and value. The Principles of Design are; pattern, rhythm, balance, unity, movement, contrast and emphasis. 6th grade will be identifying and mastering the Elements of Art. We will need to use materials to create Elements of  Art like; pencil, ink, paint, scratchboard, chalk, charcoal, clay, wire and a variety of paints.

Procedures:

Students will actively participate in hands on art experiences. This will include creating master pieces, mounting, framing, throwing (clay on a potters wheel), preliminary sketches, still life, computer work and critiques. Art history and education opportunities will be addressed. 6th grade will be primarily focused on using and identifying the Elements of Art, learning the 4 foundational steps to drawing and looking at the development of art through out historical civilizations.
